There’s a reason why there are different skin and hair products for adults and kids. Your child’s skin is much gentler than yours that cannot bear harsh chemicals. Skin specialist Dr Shefali Trasi Nerurkar tells us which one is right for your kid’s skin.

Which skincare products are safe for kids?
Products which are free of artificial fragrances, animal fat, parabens, harmful chemicals, petroleum derivatives, colour additives and alcohol are safe for kids. Here are a few brands that are safe for kids:

  • Sebamed
  • Curatio
  • Dermadew
  • Johnson’s Naturals
  • Biotique

Which products should kids avoid?
Kids must not use any products which are made specifically adults for example, shampoos, make-up, talcum powder, face creams.  This is because these can cause skin irritation, allergies or even a skin rash. Also read – can oil massage make your baby’s skin fair?

What should be done if the kid has a reaction after using adult products?
Firstly, consult a dermatologist or your paediatrician if the kid has a reaction to the product. Do not apply any cream or lotion without consulting a doctor on recommendation of a friend or any of the family members because this might cause more harm instead of providing relief.

Which ingredients are bad for kids’ skin and hair?
Following are the ingredients that are bad for kids:

  • Isopropyl alcohol
  • Propylene glycol
  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES)
  • Diethanolamine (DEA)
  • Momoethanolamine (MEA)
  • Triethanolamine (TEA)
  • Imidazolidinyl urea

These may cause skin and respiratory tract irritation and may be carcinogenic.

Tips to keep your kids from using your products:

  • Store your products in a separate cabinet or shelf that is high enough so that your child can’t reach it.
  • Tell your child which products are for him.
  • If your child wants to use your products, tell them you don’t use theirs so you can’t share yours with them.
  • Make sure that you lock your cabinet so that the kid cannot open it when you aren’t around.
