Your diet plays an important role in keeping your heart healthy. When you eat unhealthy foods regularly, the bad cholesterol is going to shoot up and your arteries are likely to get blocked – all these put pressure on your heart to work harder, to keep functioning well. Including heart-friendly foods in your diet can protect it from damage and onion is one of them.

Onion has an antioxidant called quercetin that can prevent free-radical damage. This protects your heart and other organs as well. It also helps in lowering bad cholesterol and increasing good cholesterol. Onion can also help in thinning the blood. Not only does onion work in preventing heart ailments, it is also a great remedy for people who are suffering from heart disease. Here are more reasons to eat onions.

How to include it:

  • It is best to eat onion in its raw form, so have it with meals as part of your salad.
  • If you cannot eat it raw, you can soak them in vinegar.
  • Mostly people prefer adding it to curries and gravies during tadka, but according to Dr Neha Sanwalka, onion may lose its protective factor when it comes in contact with heat.
  • You can also add finely chopped onion on your dishes.
  • An onion dip with other herbs is also a great way to eat it without cooking.
  • Some people also drink the juice of onion to reap in its benefits.
