The dashing duo Sidharth Malhotra and Akshay Kumar are all set to wow us with their boxing skills in ‘Brothers’ on August 14, 2015. And if you’ve seen its trailer, you’d know how ripped they look in it. To get such a physique, the actors sweated it out for hours every day. They reveal their workout secrets in a series of videos with the hastag #StayFit. Here’s how Sidharth got fit.
He says he did a lot of heavy weightlifting, kicking and punching, shadow boxing, mixed martial arts training, and stretching. He also did cardio which had a lot of legwork as he had to increase his speed so that he does not get slow while boxing. The actor reveals that he loves doing push-ups and does a mix of flat and decline push-ups to work on his chest and triceps as well. He also does one-clap push-ups. Preparing for this movie has made him love outdoor workouts such as TRX, rope climbing, swimming, cycling. And he tries to do more of these than working out in the gym. Watch him working out here.
Sidharth shares some tips to get a body like him. The first thing to do before any workout is to warm your body up so that you don’t get injured. One of his favourite stretches is the lower back stretch. Sid loves to skip for his warm-up as it can be done anywhere and within 10 minutes your body is ready for your exercise routine.
He says apart from working out, it is also important to chart your progress. He would often do so by clicking pictures of his body every weekend and then comparing it with the previous week’s image. He would also measure himself to find out if he’s put on weight, become more muscular, etc. This helped him figure out if he was going in the right direction. Another tip from the actor is to give one’s body adequate rest. Working out all seven days of the week can be harmful for your body and health and you are likely to fall sick and get tired very often. So make sure you rest well.
Sidharth’s favourite food is home-cooked dal and sabzi. He says one can never go wrong with home-cooked meals. The hunk also revealed that he’s turned into a vegetarian post ‘Brothers’ as he ate too much meat during the shoot to bulk up.
Akshay Kumar who is a fitness freak too shares some fitness mantras. He says people should push themselves and fight for every breath to increase their stamina. According to him, it is all in the mind. If you give in, you lose but if you can tell yourself to go an extra mile, your body will do it. He also says we must tweak our lifestyle to make fitness a way of life. ‘Turn your back on fitness, and it will turn its back on you,’ says Akshay.
We all know that Akki isn’t a gym person and he confesses that he doesn’t believe in pumping iron. He loves doing spider push-ups as they work on the entire body and give it definition and the right shape. According to him, if you can kick, punch, lift, climb, twist, balance, dive, fly, choke, all in one session, you’ve trained your body for greatness. When it comes to stretching, his favourite is back and hamstring stretch. Akshay says he cannot sleep if he doesn’t do these stretches. He advises everyone to do so as it is the kindest thing you can do for your body. Here’s how he stays fit without going to a gym.
Akshay also advises everyone to not overeat and drink at least 4-5 litres of water every day. Stock up on nuts and fruits and increase your metabolism to stay in shape and burn fat fast. Lastly, he recommends taking a day off. For him, Sunday is his family day but he also adds, he will rest when he is dead.
